Drainage – Phase 2
The Carson City Freeway drainage system is being designed in coordination with major drainage improvements to be constructed by Carson City. The resulting drainage system will provide a coordinated and functional 100-year drainage system. The Carson City Floodplain is shown below in this FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (1989, 1996).

Phase 2A of the project is complete and includes the South Water Quality Basin, located on the east side of the Freeway, south of Fifth Street. On the west side of the Freeway, the H Tributary Channel, an 80-foot wide trapezoidal channel which extends north of Linear Ditch and conveys flows to the Kings Canyon Drainage Channel, has been constructed.
Phase 2B of the project includes three detention basins, each of which also serve as water quality basins: the Bennett Detention Basin, at the intersection of Bennett Ave and Hillview Drive; the Ponderosa Detention Basin, on the north side of the Freeway between Center Drive and Ponderosa Drive; and the Voltaire Detention Basin, in the northeast corner of the S. Carson Street Interchange. Along the east side of the Freeway, the Edmonds Channel will run for 2.1 miles, from south of Clearview Drive to Linear Ditch. Just south of Linear Ditch, the channel crosses to the west side of Freeway through a reinforced concrete box culvert that is a combination drainage conveyance and livestock undercrossing.

Due to its size, depth and visibility, Voltaire Detention Basin has been specifically designed for aesthetics. Curved boundaries and contoured slopes and native vegetation will help make the area more visually appealing. Shown below is a preliminary engineering drawing of the proposed basin design.
