FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q – When will the freeway be completed?

A – The southern part of the freeway, between US 50 East and US 50 West / S. Carson Street will be built in two separate Phases. The portion between US 50 East and Fairview Drive will be constructed first. Scheduled completion is mid-2009. The portion between Fairview Drive and US 50 West / S. Carson Street will then be constructed, scheduled completion is 2012 - 2014 subject to funding availability.

Q – Will there be a bicycle/walking path along the freeway corridor?

A – A multi-use path was constructed as part of Phase 1B the freeway from Broadleaf Lane to US 50 East. It is separated from the freeway and will cross various streets that are near the freeway. Another multi-use path has been designed to connect the Linear Ditch Park multi-use path to the Carson City bicycle path system at Butti Way and E. Fifth Street. This path will be constructed as part of the Phase 2A project.

Q – Why was the northern part of the freeway built first when the biggest benefit to traffic will be on the south end of Carson City?

A – Work was started to the northern part of the freeway because more of the right-of-way needed had been purchased, allowing the construction to start sooner on this end of the project.

Q – Why can't the freeway location be moved to a less disruptive part of the city?

A – The location of the freeway has been planned for many years. The location is the preferred alternative that was selected in the late 1980s, in consideration of many factors using a process known as an environmental assessment. Much of the right-of-way needed for the freeway has been purchased while it is still undeveloped, when it is less costly and less impacting to others. The freeway will be designed to lessen negative impacts to adjacent property owners. An example of the mitigation, or reduction of impacts, will be the construction of walls to block and thereby reduce the traffic noise to adjacent residential properties.

Q – Where will I be able to get on and off of the freeway?

A – The freeway is a limited access facility similar to the I-80 and US 395 freeways in Reno.  Two half-interchanges and four full interchanges are planned for the 8-mile long freeway.

A southbound freeway off-ramp and a northbound freeway on-ramp from N. Carson Street is located near Bonanza Road.  This is one of the half-interchanges constructed in the Phase 1B project.

A southbound freeway on-ramp and northbound freeway off-ramp is located at Arrowhead Drive.  This is the second half-interchange constructed in the Phase 1B project.

Access on and off of the freeway, in both northbound and southbound directions, will be provided at the following interchange locations (full interchanges):

College Parkway
US 50 East
Fairview Drive
US 50 West & South Carson Street
